A vocal range test that throws out the squeak.
Sing your lowest note, then your highest. A note is only entered after two steady seconds, so the F8 that was really your breath never reaches your result — and what comes back is the range you can use, with the notes you only grazed listed separately.
Audio never leaves your device. The pitch is worked out in this browser tab and nothing is uploaded.
The two-second rule
Most range tests print whatever frequency they saw. That is how people end up posting A1 to D8 and nine octaves: a chair creak at the bottom, a breath at the top, and a result nobody believes — including them.
Here the ring on screen closes as two seconds run down. Let go early, drift more than a quarter tone, or land outside C2 to C6, and the reading is discarded. Discarded readings are not deleted quietly; the result names them.
- Held
- Two seconds or more, steady. This is the range you can actually sing in.
- Reached
- Touched once and gone. Kept, but shown as a second, thinner line.
- Thrown out
- Under two seconds, or off the human rule entirely. Named on your card so you can see what it was.
What comes back
Your range in note names, the way a choir director writes it: G2 – C5. Then the width in octaves and semitones, and where that width sits against everyone else who finished the test.
Under that: a named voice identity rather than a bare label, two or three singers whose recorded range overlaps yours, three songs that fit, and a card sized for a phone screen if you want to post it.
How to test your vocal range
Somewhere quiet, headphones off, phone or laptop microphone is fine. Warm up first — a cold voice will under-read at both ends by two or three semitones.
Press the button, allow the microphone once, and sing "aaah" on your lowest comfortable note. Hold it until the ring closes. Then do the same going up. Stop the moment anything hurts; a note that hurts is not part of your range, it is an injury waiting for a date.
Questions people actually ask
Are vocal range tests accurate?
As accurate as the notes you hand them. Reading pitch off a microphone is settled maths — a steady note is measured to within a few cents, which is finer than anyone sings. The error is almost never the detector; it is a breath, a chair creak, or the squeak at the top of a range being counted as a note. That is the whole reason a note here has to be held inside a quarter tone for two seconds before it is entered, and why anything thrown out is named on your result instead of quietly folded into your total.
Are online vocal range tests accurate?
For pitch, a browser is as good as a tuner in a studio — the microphone in a phone is more than accurate enough to name a note. What a browser cannot do is hear tone, or tell a supported note from a strained one, which is the part a teacher is for. Read the number as the width of your voice, not its quality.
What vocal range do I have?
You will know in about forty seconds. Most untrained adults land somewhere between an octave and a half and two and a half octaves, and the common result for a man is around G2 to G4, for a woman around G3 to G5. Wider is not better; plenty of working singers live under two octaves and never miss the notes they do not have.
Do vocal ranges include falsetto?
Here, yes — if you can hold it for two seconds it counts, falsetto or full voice. But the result splits held notes from grazed ones, so a falsetto top you can genuinely sustain reads differently from one you can only touch. If you want the chest-voice-only number, run the test twice and stop before you flip.
How many octaves can I sing?
The result gives you the count in octaves and semitones and the percentile beside it. Treat any test claiming four or five octaves for a beginner as having counted a breath: that is the failure mode this one was built to remove.
What if my microphone doesn't work?
You can type the two notes instead — pick them off a keyboard app, choose them from the lists, and the result and the card come out the same. You lose the two-second check, so the result says plainly that it is your word for it.
