Types · bands and exemplars

Vocal type test: 8 identities across 7 classical labels.

A vocal type test measures two notes and hands you a label. The label is useful and it is not the whole answer: the classical types classify a trained voice by timbre and where it sits for a whole song, not by span alone, so a type is never a test result on its own.

The table below is what the label is read off: 8 named bands, each with the singers in the catalogue who sit in it. The widest is quiet storm at 2 octaves and 5 semitones; the narrowest is easy tenor at 1 octave and 10 semitones.

The named identities are a presentation layer, not a musicological claim. They are matched on how much of your held band sits inside theirs, and the classical label sits beside the name on your result.

The 8 identities

Each identity is a band of the keyboard and a handful of singers who sit in it. The singers are exemplars, not a ranking.

Each named identity, the band it covers, and the singers in the catalogue inside it.

Two things people ask about the label

Can two notes decide my voice type?

No, and the result says so. Where your voice sits comfortably for four minutes, where it changes gear and what it sounds like all count for more than how low you can grunt. What two notes can do is narrow it to one or two labels and give a teacher the numbers to argue with.

Why are there more identities than classical labels?

Because a couple of the classical bands cover voices that behave differently inside them. The identity is the plain name for where you actually sit; the classical label is the word a choir director will use for the same thing.
